Flame to Flame
MIXED DIGITAL AND MANUAL FABRICATION - IN PROGRESS
The creation of this sculpture was the result of a series of sketches and studies and then using the SubD modeling tool in Rhino software. Once I learned how to use RhinoCAM to CNC the pieces, I became familiar with the CNC’s capabilities and limitations. The parts were designed to fit within milled 8/4 material, and the wholes were divided into parts based on grain direction and size. Tool pathing was done with RhinoCAM and then milled on a ShopSabre router. The boards were pinned in the middle so they could be milled on both sides. Lugs were sometimes left in the ends to prevent tear-out and to aid with clamping. After this, chisels, rasps, and sanding were used to achieve the final form.
