Cleo Rogers Memorial Library Extension
Architectural Design Studio

The objective of this project is to design an extension (Architectural Archives) of Cleo Rogers Memorial Library by I.M Pei in Columbus, Indiana.
I started the project by analyzing the design of the library and choosing unique design elements to bring into the new extension as a form of a conversation between the library and the new addition. The architect used big pillars to define the space by repeating and shifting these pillars I.M Pei created rooms and corridors. By Picking this element of shaping the space to design the extension, the pillars were maximized to create actual walls, they shifted and rotated to shape the base of the design.
As for the windows I created a conversation on the north and south sides of the design with the library. The openings on the south, facing the library are in contrast to the library. (The openings in the library face solid walls in the addition and solid walls of the library face the openings of the new extension.) The openings on the northern side of the extension however were exactly in the same location as the openings of the library.
To create a solution to stop the intense sunlight and heat from coming inside the building and windows facing east and west, a second skin was designed to cover the building with the same concept of shifting planes. This perforation got bigger in areas that needed more light and visibility and got denser in other parts.
